Juniors: Start Your UC PIQ’s Now!
Feeling the pressure of next year’s college applications, but don’t know where to start? Feeling paralyzed by the enormity of the task?
Our recommendation is to start the University of California (UC) Personal Insight Questions (PIQs) right now. Here’s why:
1. Give Yourself Time for Self-Reflection & Content Creation
Picking content for your PIQs can be difficult. Perhaps you have so many achievements to discuss, or maybe you feel you don’t have enough to showcase. Either way, starting your PIQs now gives you time to reflect on your experiences, figure out what’s most important to you, or motivate yourself to take on new opportunities and experiences to incorporate later.
By starting early, you can:
Strategically select content to use for each prompt - this is a puzzle!
Dedicate time to creating new content for your essays: take on leadership roles, join new clubs, etc. You don’t know what your application is missing until you start putting it together!
Identify which parts of you experience are most important to you, and find ways to highlight those.
PIQs require honest, reflective answers that take time to develop. When you start writing now, you give yourself space to explore your experiences and identify what really sets you apart.
2. Familiarize Yourself with the PIQ Structure
The UC PIQs are your biggest opportunity to stand out among thousands of applicants. To write successful PIQs, you’ll need to strike a balance between formulaic, evidence-backed claims and strong, creative writing.
This type of writing is often hard for our students, and starting now means you can brainstorm ideas, write multiple drafts, and refine your style. All without the stress of a time-crunch, which is the quickest way to get writer’s block!
3. Polish Your Writing with Constructive Feedback
Stellar essays require many rounds of revisions.
Whether you’re working with a college consultant, teachers, or family members, getting feedback early will help you refine your ideas and make your responses even stronger.
We see that most students do their best writing at the end of the admissions cycle, when they’ve hit their groove after practicing for months. Unfortunately, this means their earliest (and most important) applications receive less-than-the-best writing.
Don’t let that happen to you! Start now so that you hit your groove before any of your applications are due.
4. Avoid the Stress of Last-Minute Writing
It’s easy to underestimate how time-consuming and challenging writing strong PIQ essays can be - especially when you’re balancing your Common App essays and supplemental essays.
Starting early helps you avoid writer’s block or rushing to meet deadlines. You’ll have a sense of control and peace of mind knowing you’re ahead of the game.
5. Use the Summer to Fine-Tune Your Essays & Work on the Common App
We recommend finishing your PIQs before summer, so that you can dedicate summer break to your Common App essay and supplemental essays. How great would it feel to finish you application before the start of senior year?
Of course, we won’t submit applications that early. But having them prepared means you have extra time to refine and perfect every component of your application.
In Conclusion
The UC PIQ essays are a crucial part of your college application, and starting them early will give you a significant advantage. Not only will you have time for reflection, brainstorming, and feedback, but you’ll also avoid the stress of last-minute writing. So, if you haven’t already, take some time to explore the prompts, brainstorm ideas, and start drafting your responses.
